We have a range of services, to meet your needs, from a standard erasure of data to physical destruction of the medium itself, on your site or ours. As standard we provide a certificate of erasure and destruction listing serial numbers and media type. This certificate is useful for Audit and Data Protection Act (DPA) compliance amongst others.

At Ultratec we take the erasure & destruction of confidential data very seriously. We are the authorised recycling company for many OEM's processing thousands of hard drives & tapes per month. We absolutely guarantee the complete and permanent removal of data from the media. Our expert knowledge of recovering data from so called 'erased' disks gives us the inside track on how to totally destroy data or residual data.

Ultratec offers the following Services erasure and destruction – 8 variations:

Service 1: Off site (Ultratec) Data Erasure – hard disks only

Using bespoke test equipment and disk manufacturers’ equipment we overwrite the disk 4 times in accordance with the US DoD 5220.22m Standard (see below). This is the adopted standard for the military and industry for the UK and Europe.

Ultratec have the largest hard drive remanufacturing facility outside of the Far East. The equipment was from a hard disk manufacturer and so we are able to access the internal disk firmware to ensure a complete erasure of the entire disk. Due to the power and firmware we use the disks can have a full 3 pass (plus) service which will be up to 80% (and more) faster than any other service: very useful when dealing with large capacity hard disks. 8 hours or less for a 300Gb Hard disk.

The standard only requires 3 passes. It is a fact that the “7” passes stated in the HMG version of the DOD standard is a typographical error.

This service is provided on our site using the absolute latest technology with interfaces for even the latest hard disks. Our specialist equipment (hard disk manufacturers standard and actual hard disk manufacturers lab equipment) are the only ones in Europe to process up to 200 hard disks at a time (9000 when all of our equipment has been installed). The process involves erasure to exceed DoD 5220.22m standard - firmware is built into the “frame” and we can provide even 4 (or more if you wish) times overwrite if at all required. Each disk is analysed, Erased, and possibly repaired. The process and serial numbers (actual and labelled) per disk are recorded. Should a disk completely fail then it is destroyed using our Data Destruction Service – see below. Certificates are provided listing the serial number of the disk(s) the disks type and when it was erased. We have a special indemnity to illustrate how serious we are about permanently eliminating data from media.

Service 2: Data Erasure

Option 1: On site (customer’s) Data Erasure – hard disks only
Engineer arrives on site and uses an approved software package to erase the data per machine. Certificates issued.

Option 2: (for Bulk erasure) - “The Ultimate On Site Erasure Service”
We will install an Ultratec80 (see picture below) hard disk erasure system (ex disk manufactures’ system) and provide an engineer. The machine will process up to 80 hard drives of ANY standard interface on site simultaneously.

Service 3: Data Destruction Service – On site (customer’s)

This service provides cost effective Secure Data Destruction, at your site, for all magnetic data storage media.

This service uses a CESG approved degausser to remove all data on media marked RESTRICTED or below. This service is operated by our own Defence Vetting Agency Security Check (“SC”) engineers.

Van, Engineer, and equipment will arrive on the customer site. There are no systems which can read any magnetic media on board. We invite an observer who can verify that processed medium cannot be read by trying to load it back on the original system. Once all the media has been processed the customer will be asked to sign the worksheet.

If the option for environmentally compliant (WEEE directive) disposal of the processed media has been taken then the engineer will take the media away for smelting and refining.

A certificate detailing all media processed is issued on completion.

Service 4: Data Destruction on Ultratec site
This includes failed drives and tapes.

Service as above, but on our site.

Additionally we can granulate tapes on arrival – this is a low cost guaranteed service

There are no machines approved for the “CESG Higher level degaussing standard” . All of our machines comply with the lower level and will easily comply with the higher level when the higher level has been ratified.

Ultratec conforms to the US Department of Defense in the clearing and sanitizing of data. Details are shown below :

US Department of Defence 5220.22-M Clearing and Sanitization Matrix

a. Degauss with a Type I degausser
b. Degauss with a Type II degausser.
c. Overwrite all addressable locations with a single character.
d. Overwrite all addressable locations with a character, its complement, then a random character and verify. THIS METHOD IS NOT APPROVED FOR SANITIZING MEDIA THAT CONTAINS TOP SECRET INFORMATION.
e. Overwrite all addressable locations with a character, its complement, then a random character.
f. Each overwrite must reside in memory for a period longer than the classified data resided.
g. Remove all power to include battery power.
h. Overwrite all locations with a random pattern, all locations with binary zeros, all locations with binary ones.
i. Perform a full chip erase as per manufacturer's data sheets.
j. Perform i above, then c above, a total of three times.
k. Perform an ultraviolet erase according to manufacturer's recommendation.
l. Perform k above, but increase time by a factor of three.
m. Destroy - Disintegrate, incinerate, pulverize, shred, or melt.
